What is an Upper Lip Lift?

The ideal distance between the base of the nose (columella) and the upper lip is typically 11–12 mm. Unfortunately, in many individuals, this distance is longer—about 15–16 mm, which can make the lips appear less attractive and causes the Cupid’s bow to become poorly defined. Additionally, during smiling, the upper gums may become overly visible above the teeth line.

A surgical upper lip lift, also known as the Hinderer or Bullhorn Lip Lift, involves removing a strip of skin located just beneath the nose, stretching from one nostril wing to the other.

This procedure permanently improves the shape of the lips and slightly enhances their volume, adjusting the lip-to-nose ratio to a more aesthetically pleasing proportion. The treatment is performed under local anesthesia. Fine sutures are placed after the procedure and are usually removed within 7–14 days.
